What Are The 3 Highest Courts?

The three highest courts in Kansas are…

  1. Kansas Supreme Court –  The Kansas Supreme Court is the highest judicial authority in the state. It has final appellate jurisdiction over all cases decided in the lower courts, including the Court of Appeals and the district courts. The Supreme Court primarily hears appeals on questions of law and issues decisions that establish legal precedent in the state.
  2. Kansas Court of Appeals –  The Kansas Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court that hears appeals from the district courts in cases where an appeal is allowed as a matter of right or by permission. The Court of Appeals reviews lower court decisions for errors of law and procedural issues. It consists of a panel of judges who consider cases and issue written opinions.
  3. District Courts –  While not technically one single court, the district courts collectively represent the trial courts of general jurisdiction in Kansas. Each of Kansas’s 31 judicial districts has its own district court. District courts have original jurisdiction over a wide range of cases, including criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, and other matters. These courts are where most legal disputes and criminal cases are initially heard and decided.

These three courts form the core of the Kansas state court system, with each playing a distinct role in the administration of justice in the state.
