In Kansas, the four types of courts are…

1. District Courts –  District courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction in Kansas. There are 31 judicial districts in the state, each with its district court. District courts have jurisdiction over a wide range of cases, including criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, and other matters. They are the primary trial courts where most legal disputes and criminal cases are initially heard and decided.
2. Kansas Court of Appeals –  The Kansas Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court that hears appeals from the district courts in cases where an appeal is allowed as a matter of right or by permission. The Court of Appeals reviews lower court decisions for errors of law and procedural issues. It consists of a panel of judges who consider cases and issue written opinions.
3. Kansas Supreme Court –  The Kansas Supreme Court is the highest judicial authority in the state. It has final appellate jurisdiction over all cases decided in the lower courts, including the Court of Appeals and the district courts. The Supreme Court primarily hears appeals on questions of law and issues decisions that establish legal precedent in the state.
4. Municipal Courts –  Municipal courts are established by cities and municipalities to adjudicate violations of local ordinances and certain state laws within their jurisdiction. These courts handle a variety of cases, including traffic offenses, misdemeanor offenses, and violations of city ordinances. Municipal courts are typically presided over by municipal judges and operate independently of the state court system.
